Beyond Passive AI: Embracing Assertive Technology for Growth

In today’s fast-changing tech world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming essential for businesses. However, many discussions about AI, especially in boardrooms across Australia, tend to focus on a limited view of its potential. It’s time to expand our thinking and explore the full range of AI capabilities, including what I call “assertive AI.”

Passive, Reactive, and Assertive AI: A New Taxonomy

AI can be divided into three main types: passive, reactive, and assertive. Passive AI includes tools that quietly gather and analyze information, like data mining and automated reports. Reactive AI, such as customer service chatbots and virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa, responds to user questions and requests. However, assertive AI is where we can find exciting new opportunities.

Assertive AI actively engages with people, starting conversations and driving results. While some assertive AI applications have been misused—like bots that manipulate social media or scam people on dating apps—there are also many positive uses. For example, imagine AI agents that conduct background checks by reaching out to former colleagues on LinkedIn, or AI tools that engage customers in meaningful discussions to gather valuable feedback. Another idea is AI career assistants that identify skill gaps and suggest personalized learning paths.

Shifting the Conversation: From Risk to Opportunity

Currently, many discussions about AI in Australia focus on risks and job losses. While these are important topics, we should also highlight the exciting opportunities AI can create. Instead of only worrying about efficiency leading to job cuts, let’s explore how AI can help businesses grow.

For instance, AI can help managers oversee larger teams by automating routine tasks and providing real-time insights. AI project management tools can track progress and identify potential problems, allowing organizations to take on more complex projects. Additionally, AI-enhanced customer relationship management systems can enable sales teams to manage larger client portfolios while still providing personalized service.

How about receiving in your mailbox an advertisement for an AI software solution that helps your organization expand its hiring capabilities instead of reducing your team size?

Embracing Assertive AI: A Call to Action

As leaders, we need to focus on the innovative potential of assertive AI applications. Just like past technologies found new uses beyond their original purpose, AI is ready to open up new paths for business growth and community improvement.

Beyond the examples mentioned, assertive AI could transform areas like preventive healthcare, where AI engages people about their health habits. It could also help in environmental conservation by monitoring and responding to ecological changes, or in governance by informing citizens about relevant policies and gathering their feedback. In recent weeks, there have been advertisements for AI systems capable of conducting scientific research and driving laboratory experiments.

In conclusion, while we must be aware of the ethical concerns and risks, it’s essential to bring assertive AI discussions into the spotlight. By doing this, we can unlock its full potential to drive innovation, create new business models, and tackle complex challenges. As senior leaders and board members, let’s explore these new opportunities together.
